Biofeedback for Migraine

Strong evidence: biofeedback significantly reduces headache frequency and intensity. In studies it can be comparable to medication; benefits may be synergistic when combined with drug therapy.

Integrative wellbeing

  • Headaches and tension are cited in stress-regulation and wellbeing-oriented biofeedback contexts.
  • Protocols are tailored by the therapist; this is complementary support, not diagnosis or a guaranteed clinical outcome.

Evidence and practice

Biofeedback equipment applied during a therapist-guided session.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses (including 558 participants) report that biofeedback reduces headache frequency and intensity compared with waitlist. Some analyses describe no significant difference versus medication or CBT in certain comparisons, often described as clinical equivalence in those trials. Benefit may be synergistic when combined with medication as prescribed.

Frequently asked questions (health education)

General information; not individual medical advice.

Reviews report reduced frequency and intensity versus waitlist. Mechanisms discussed include autonomic regulation and EMG feedback in some protocols. Individual response varies. For general background, see stress physiology, autonomic nervous system and vagus nerve regulation.
Do not change medication without medical advice. Some literature describes synergistic benefit when combined; that is a clinical decision. Speak to your doctor or neurologist.
