Biofeedback for chronic pain

Strong evidence as complementary therapy: meaningful reductions in pain intensity and improved quality of life. EMG for musculoskeletal pain; HRV for central sensitisation syndromes.

Evidence and practice

Biofeedback device applied during a therapist-guided session.

Evidence is often reported for biofeedback as complementary therapy in several chronic pain contexts. EMG biofeedback is frequently discussed for musculoskeletal pain; HRV biofeedback appears in central sensitisation-related discussions. Systematic reviews (2014–2024) and clinical trials (e.g. low back pain) are cited in the literature; individual response varies.

Frequently asked questions (health education)

General information; not individual medical advice.

Studies cite, among others, musculoskeletal contexts with EMG protocols and central sensitisation-related situations where HRV may be part of multimodal care. Clinical teams choose protocols; this page does not diagnose or prescribe.
No. It is complementary therapy. Persistent or severe pain needs medical assessment. See the studies matrix for evidence framing.
